Telia have announced their new practical mobile broadband speed maps based on CellVision’s mBOSS solutions. The translated press relase follows:

Check the speed instead of the weather this summer. A laptop with mobile broadband is the summer gadget that Swedes preferably takes it to their summer residence. Telia are the first operator to launch a speed map on the Internet that gives customers the opportunity to see the minimum and maximum practical speed that can usually be achieved with mobile broadband anywhere in the country.

In Telia's summer survey, it is the portable computer with internet that Swedes give priority to bring to their summer housing in Sweden. “Summer is high season for domestic travel in Sweden and people want to be able to connect to the internet with their mobile broadband, whether they are in the cottage, boat or caravan. By introducing Velocity map, we want to make it even easier for our customers all over the whole country see what practical speeds are achievable in the place where you are," says Erik Hallberg, head of Mobility Services at TeliaSonera in Sweden.

Recently Telia, along with other mobile operators in Sweden, agreed to communicate practical speeds rather than theoretical speeds in its marketing. Now Telia have developed this further for their customers with the ability to see the minimum and maximum practical speed available in various locations across the country.

The speed of mobile broadband networks will vary depending on coverage and capacity at the location the customer is at. Examples of factors affecting the capacity and thus the practical speed, is the number of simultaneous users who are connected at that location, if you are indoors, at a window or in the basement or outdoors, and what speeds terminals and modems are capable of. Telia offers all mobile broadband customers open purchase in 30 days with an option to exit its mobile broadband subscriptions within 30 days after purchase if, for example, they are not satisfied with the speed.

Telia's mobile broadband network reaches the largest population in Sweden, both in terms of area and population coverage:
  • EDGE covers 92% of Sweden's surface
  • 3G covers 99% of the population
  • Turbo 3G and 3G + reaches over 8 million inhabitants
  • Telia also has the largest number of hotspots with WLAN in Sweden. Today, Telia has over 2500 surf zones which will increase to 2800 in July when the expansion of new hotspots in Statoil is completed.
  • Telia is the first operator in Sweden with the new 4G network, next-generation super-fast mobile broadband, in Stockholm

Telia's summer survey was conducted by United Minds in the form of an e-mail during the period May 1 to May 22. Total answered the survey of 2 201 Swedes in the age group 18 years and upwards. The sample of respondents was based on demographic quotas to represent the population by gender, age and geographical residence.
